The effect of vitamin E deficiency on some platelet membrane properties.

چکیده
The effects of alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E) deficiency on membrane properties of platelets were studied to determine if vitamin E has a measureable stabilizing role in biological membranes. Three groups of rats and three of mice were studied: two groups consisted of Fisher strain rats and one of Sprague-Dawley rats fed a Draper corn oil diet with and without high levels of supplementary vitamin E. The mice were two groups of BALB/c animals maintained on an 8% hydrogenated coconut oil diet, and one group of CBA/J mice on an 8% lard diet, in each case either deficient in or supplemented with vitamin E. The relative content of fatty acids obtained from both rat platelets and erythrocytes was unchanged by vitamin E deficiency. Depletion of vitamin E had no effect on the degree of fluorescence polarization of 1,6-diphenyl-1,3,5,-hexatriene-labeled rat platelets. No changes in hematocrit values were seen in any of the studies. The platelet count of only the vitamin E-deficient Sprague-Dawley rats was elevated with respect to vitamin E-supplemented counterparts; the others remained constant. Platelet reactivities, as measured by ADP-and thrombin-induced platelet aggregation and by the thrombin-induced changes in platelet transmembrane potential, were unaffected by vitamin E deficiency in all three groups of rats. Our results indicate that a membrane stabilizing effect of vitamin E on rat platelet or erythrocyte membrane fatty acids or on platelet response to external stimuli could not be demonstrated, nor was elevation in platelet count a general phenomenon associated with vitamin E deficiency.-Whitin, J. ABSTRACT A large number of drugs have been demonstrated to effect platelet function and production .Even when shown to alter platelet function following ingestion of these drugs ,information on the effect of hematological parameter and the clinical significance is unavailable for many drugs. There is a lot of evidence in favour of significant changes in the activity of platelet function by vit...

Background: Through its membrane and intracellular receptors, vitamin D regulates many vital functions in the body including its well known actions on musculoskeletal system. Growing body of evidences demonstrate that vitamin D undergoes some of behavioral aspects of neurocognition. The present study was designed to evaluate the effect of food regimens without vitamin D or with a supplement of ...
متن کاملTreatment of vitamin D deficiency with high-dose vitamin D supplementation and its effect on hematological indices in pregnancy: A secondary analysis of a randomized clinical trial
Introduction: There are few studies regarding the treatment of vitamin D deficiency with a high dose of vitamin D and the comparison of serum vitamin D levels and hematological indices (Hemoglobin, Hematocrit, Platelet and Ferritin) in the first and second trimesters of pregnancy. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of vitamin D supplementation on these hematological indices in pre...

In calcareous and alkaline soils, which include most of Iran soils, iron deficiency is prevalent. The main cause of iron deficiency chlorosis is high pH of soil. Among fruit trees, peach shows high sensitivity to iron deficiency. Chelated iron fertilizers with a great ability to make iron soluble and readily absorbed by the plant are used for iron deficiency. For this purpose, an experiment bas...
متن کاملEffect of hydrosoluble vitamin E on erythrocyte membrane lipid composition in patients with advanced cirrhosis: An open-label pilot trial.
AIM Deficiency in vitamin E, a natural antioxidant, participates in abnormal erythrocyte membrane lipids, structural alterations and hemolysis in advanced cirrhosis. Poor absorption of fat-soluble vitamins limits full correction of deficiency with standard formulations in cirrhosis with cholestasis. The aim of the present study was to examine safety and effects of tocofersolan, a water-soluble ...
